Prevention and care for children

Purpose of paediatric ophthalmology

The early years are fundamental to vision development as this is constantly developing throughout this season. Any deficiency or anomaly that goes undiagnosed in these early years can leave vision defects that can later become permanent. As such, ophthalmology for children has an important role to play in prevention. The first paediatric ophthalmology check-up should be carried out at age three and, under normal circumstances, should be repeated annually.

Exceptional cases

You should attend an exceptional paediatric ophthalmology consultation before age three if:

First month of life

If the paediatrician sees something abnormal, such as in the case of ocular malformations or diseases, like glaucoma or congenital cataracts.

At seven months of age

If the paediatrician makes a preliminary diagnosis of strabismus, or if the parents notice that one or both of the child’s eyes has a tendency to wander.

Select one of the following frequently asked questions from our patients to display the answer. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please contact us using the form below.

Do all children need to have check-ups?

It is important to carry out a series of check-ups all through a child’s development as a child who is born with a vision abnormality will not complain of seeing poorly as they will always have seen like that, and many of these defects can only be solved with early treatment.

What is a “lazy eye”?

Amblyopia, more commonly known as “lazy eye”, appears where the eye develops incorrectly due to a lack of visual stimulation. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to being able to recover full vision.

Can children have a serious eye disorder?

Yes, although less prevalent, almost all disorders that we typically associate with adult age, such as glaucoma or cataracts, can appear in children.

Why might the prescription strength be lowered with children?

The prescription strength and consequent need for using glasses or contact lenses, can be the result of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. In cases of myopia, the prescription will typically increase. However, in certain hyperopias, we may see a reduction in the prescription strength with growth as it is really a physiological hyperopia due to the small size of a child’s eye, so it can resolve as the child grows.
