Refractive surgery in Valencia
ReLEx SMILE (Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a newly designed procedure used to operate myopia using femtosecond laser.
Femtosecond laser involves doing microincisions inside the intact cornea. ReLEx SMILE’s aim is to cut a section of the corneal stroma (lenticule) so that it can be removed in order to reduce the cornea´s curvature and so myopia and astigmatism.
ReLEx SMILE procedure is carried out using exclusively femtosecond laser in 3 steps:
- The surgeon uses femtosecond laser to cut a segment of tissue inside the corneal stroma (lenticule), whose size and shape depend on the degree of myopia which needs to be corrected.
- Using the same laser, a microincision is done in order to have access to the lenticule created inside the cornea.
- Using surgical tweezers, the surgeon removes the extra tissue through the microincision.
The main advantage of ReLEx SIMLE procedure (as with PRK) used to correct myopia and astigmatism, is that it is a flapless procedure. Flap-related postoperative complications, such as dry eye or corneal ectasia and traumatism induced flap displacements, are therefore reduced.
Results achieved using ReLEx SMILE create high expectations for the foreseeable future. Up to now, many patients have undergone surgery using this technique obtaining very positive results, making it possible for this procedure to be as popular as other techniques, such as LASIK or PRK, are now.
